5 Types Of Plastic Moulding

Plastic homeware molding is the process of pouring liquid plastic into a specific container or mold, allowing it to harden into a custom shape. These plastic molds can be used for a variety of purposes. There are 5 types of plastic molding that are considered the most effective and popular.

The 5 types are extrusion molding, compression molding, blow molding, injection molding, and rotational molding.

1. Extrusion Moulding

Plastic homeware molds are formed by extrusion, where hot melt plastic is squeezed through a molding hole to form long plastic parts. The customizable shape into which this liquid plastic is pressed is called a mold. The mold is customized based on the specific results desired. It's almost like running the dough through a press into shaped cookies.

Other forms of plastic molding also use extrusion, where the stock liquid is placed into a mold, the difference is that other methods use the mold to create the desired shape, whereas here extrusion itself uses the shape of the mold to create the shape.

Common Uses of Extrusion Moulding

When using this method, your product will have the same shape continuously along its length. These can be things like straws or PVC pipes. Finally, these types of parts can be produced in high volumes.

In comparison, this molding method is less expensive because the equipment is fairly simple and productivity is high. The downside to this approach is that you are very limited when it comes to the kinds of parts you can make.

2. Compression Moulding

This method involves the raw liquid plastic being poured into a heated mould and then being compressed together to form the desired shape. The high temperature of the entire process ensures good strength in the final product. The process is finished off by cooling the liquid plastic so that it keeps its form before being trimmed and removed from the mould.

Common Uses of Compression Moulding

The most effective use for this method is when you want to make plastic replacement parts for broken metal parts. The reason for this is because the high-temperature method makes for a very strong and durable end product. Even though it is plastic, it is a strong and low-cost replacement for the metal parts.

3. Blow Moulding

With blow moulding, the custom plastic parts come out hollow and thin-walled. This method is ideal for when the plastic part has to have uniform wall thickness. This is very similar to the process of glass blowing.

The machine heats up the raw plastic until it becomes liquid and then injects air into it like a balloon. The plastic is blown into a shaped mould and as it gets bigger it presses against the mould walls and it starts to take its shape. After the liquid balloon fills the mould it is cooled to keep its shape.

Common Uses for Blow Moulding

Blow Moulding is mostly responsible for producing products like plastic bottles, drums, cases and even fuel tanks. If your required number of parts is around the hundreds of thousands then this method is perfect for you.

4. Injection Moulding

Injection molding is very similar to extrusion molding. The difference here is that with injection molding, molten plastic is injected directly into a custom mold. The injection is performed under high pressure in order to fill the mold and create a solid part. As with other methods, after the mold is filled, the plastic is cooled to maintain its new shape, and then the mold is opened.

Common Uses for Injection Moulding

This is a common method for producing large quantities of plastic parts, such as automotive parts and even surgical parts. Finally, products can also be more flexible.

5. Rotational molding

This type is also known as rotational molding, a method that involves placing a resin or liquid inside a mold and then rotating it at high speed. And the liquid evenly covers the entire surface of the mold, forming all hollow parts with uniform wall thickness. Finally, after the mold has cooled and the liquid plastic has taken on a new shape, it is removed from the mold.

Common uses of rotational molding

The most common use of this method is for large and hollow parts. Such as car parts, litter boxes, kayaks, road cones, pet houses and storage tanks.

The most common injection molding materials

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

High-density polyethylene, an injection-molded material, is a flexible, solid thermoplastic used primarily in plastic bottles, shampoo bottles, toys, recycling bins and flower pots. The main advantages of using HDPE are that it is affordable and the material is hard and strong.

Low density polyethylene (LDPE)

LDPE is a softer and more flexible material than HDPE. Low-density polyethylene is used as an injection molding material, for example, in the manufacture of bottles, plastic bags, plastic wrap, etc. Finally, the benefit of using this material is its moisture and chemical resistance.

Polyoxymethylene (POM)

Polyacetal, also known as acetal, is a hard and tough plastic injection molding material. This material can be used to produce automotive parts. Secondly, other uses for this material include making zippers, fan wheels, or door handles. Finally, it features a high surface gloss.

Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR)

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
